Tomcat7 change default root directory in ubuntu

  • Create a file ROOT.xml in $CATALINA_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/
    In my case its/var/lib/tomcat7/conf/Catalina/localhost/
  • Add following code into ROOT.xml file
    <Context
    docBase="custom_root_path"
    path=""
    reloadable="true"
    />

    In my case custom_root path is /var/www
  • Restart apache tomcat7 using this command:
    service tomcat6 stop
    service tomcat6 start
  • Create index.html file in custom_root_path and access tomcat localhost using http://localhost:8080
